Bernard Ewell, A.S.A

As an Accredited Senior Appraiser for the American Society of Appraisers, Ewell has provided professional services since 1972 and has specialized in the works of Salvador Dali since 1980. Having examined and appraised over 48,000 Salvador Dalí prints as well as the collection of The Salvador Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida (in 1987, 1993, and 1998), and a great many private collections (including the Albaretto Collection), Mr. Ewell is considered the foremost authority on the art of Salvador Dalí, and has been personally certified by the Albaretto Family of Turin, Italy to authenticate works from the Albaretto Collection.

As a recognized expert in the field, Mr. Ewell has provided appraisals, court reports and testimony for the Federal Trade Commission, the FBI, the IRS, the US Attorneys of New York and Hawaii, the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations, the US Navy, the US Postal Inspection Service, the Attorneys General of New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Missouri, and numerous local law enforcement agencies and private attorneys. He also served as a consultant for the CBS News “60 Minutes” Broadcast on the Dali market, Money Magazine, Forbes Magazine and numerous newspapers.  Working with the Wisconsin Attorney General, he co-authored the Art Multiples Law, designed to serve as a model for other states.

In addition to being the subject of a great many articles and a television documentary, Mr. Ewell has published over eighty magazine articles. He is an analytical columnist for ART-TALK magazine and a contributing author for the Handbook on the Appraisal of Personal Property and the Personal Property Journal. He has lectured at numerous museums from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum to the National Gallery in Beijing.

He has also served as a course developer and instructor for the American Society of Appraisers. He has taught at the University of Missouri, Kansas City; George Washington University, Washington D.C.; the Rhode Island School of Design; and the University of California, Irvine.

Ewell is currently working on a three year commission to research and write the definitive catalogue raisonné of prints attributed to Salvador Dalí. Publication is projected for 2010.
